BREAKING NEW GROUND IN THE LATIN AMERICAN MARKET

Galician music takes to the stage at the Buenos Aires International Music Fair (BAFIM) with concerts from Carlos Núñez, Xoel López, Vetusta Morla, Aló Irmao and Uxía

[13/11/09] Galicia’s music industry will be represented in force at the fair by a delegation comprised of five companies and two professional associations from the sector, together with a programme of concerts by some of the region’s best known performers: Carlos Núñez, Xoel López, Vetusta Morla, Aló Irmao and Uxía. Buenos Aires, a city with one of the world’s largest Galician communities, will be the stage for the event between the 19th and 22nd of November, the Buenos Aires International Music Fair (BAFIM). This is the latest project presented by the Regional Minister of Culture and Tourism, Roberto Varela, with the support of the Galician Cultural Industries Agency (AGADIC), and is included as part of a series of strategies for promoting the Galician music sector in Latin America.

The Regional Minister of Culture held a working meeting this morning with representatives of ten companies and the two main associations of music entrepreneurs - the Galician Association of Music Companies (AGEM) and the Galician Record Producers’ Association (Agaphono), after which he announced that the AGADIC will create two new lines of funding aimed at improving equipment in recording studios and production companies, as well as for major recording projects with special production features.

International Agreements

Robert Varela also announced that artists and companies will receive funding for touring and performing outside of Galicia as part of a general plan, which also includes the artist exchange agreements that are about to be signed with Catalonia, Brazil, Portugal and Central European countries. He emphasised the relevance of Galicia’s presence at the BAFIM as part of the strategy for the international promotion of our music, taking into account the reputation of the fair in Buenos Aires as one of the most solidly consolidated events in the Latin American music industry. A total of 750 accredited professionals from all over the world will be present at the fair, which expects around 100,000 visitors.

The Regional Minister of Culture explained that the priority of the business delegation at the international fair in Buenos Aires is to open solid inroads for the Galician music industry in the Latin American market, with the support of important companies in the sector and leading artists and performers. Another goal is to consolidate relations with Brazil as a strategic partner in South America thanks to the agreement recently signed at the Womex event in Copenhagen for musical exchanges between Galicia and the state of Minas Gerais. Further opportunities will be sought for laying the foundations for new bilateral agreements for promoting Galician music in other Latin American markets.

Own Stand

The companies EsmerArte Servicios Artísticos, Keltia Producións, Nordesía, Ouvirmos and Lonxa Cultural together with the associations Agaphono and AGEM will present themselves at the Galician music stand at the BAFIM. This will be one of the focal points for business and promotional activities, providing logistical support for the companies, business intermediation and attending to the general public, as well as hosting specific activities such as record signings by artists and groups including Xoel López or Vetusta Morla. The AGEM, with the support of the AGADIC, was responsible for organising Galicia’s participation at the event employing the strategy previously used at Womex 09.

Galicia’s activities at the fair, which also include a showcase from Xoel López as part of the official selection of the BAFIM, will be supported by a parallel programme of concerts in different venues throughout the Argentinean capital, featuring some of the most important artists represented by the Galician companies travelling to Buenos Aires. Apart from Xoel López, Aló Irmâo (Fran Pérez "Narf" and Manecas Costa), Carlos Núñez, Uxía and Vetusta Morla will be performing between the 18th and 21st of November at theatres and concert halls in Buenos Aires in a series of events entitled "The Music of the Galicians", supported by the trademark and website "GalicianTunes".

Additionally, a reception with the Galician community and political and cultural figures is planned to be held at the Galician Centre in Buenos Aires on the 20th of November at 7.00 p.m., where the singer Uxía will perform a live set.
